英語ジャーナリングのやりかた|TOEIC830の僕が2週間続けて感じた効果

僕の英語

ざっとですが、僕の英語レベルです。

  • 社会人4年目
  • 留学や海外に住んでいた経験なし
  • 学生時代の英語は可もなく不可もなく(センターで7割くらい)
  • 社会人2年目でTOEIC 830点取得
  • 社会人3年目に1年間だけ、月3, 4回英会話に通う

もともと可もなく不可もないレベルで、でも、英語を話せるようになりたい、という気持ちがあり、継続して英語学習を続けていました。TOEICで830点を取得し、1年間英会話にも通いました。簡単な会話程度であれば、それなりに話すことができるのですが、仕事で自信をもって話せるか、というと難しい感じです。

課題

英会話を始めて1年ほどたつと、英語の伸びが鈍くなっているように感じました。Youtubeでほかの人の学習方法やロードマップを調べたり、英会話のどういうところで困るかを振り返ったところ、以下の問題に気づきました。

流暢さや自然さが足りない。

  • 話している最中に頻繁に止まる(例 , uh…, so…., but….)。
  • 本当に言いたいことを伝えるよりも、30~40%程度でも伝わる簡単な表現を選んでしまう。(例, )

1年間英会話に通っている中で、自分の持っている単語や表現を最大限用いて話す力を身に着けることができました。週末何をするか、どんな趣味があるか、相手に簡単な質問を投げかけることはできるようになりましたが、政治、仕事、困っていること、ちょっと難しい小説の話、そういった類の話をする際には、頻繁に止まったり、伝えやすさを優先して、意見を単純化してしまっていました。

解決方法(ジャーナリング)

そこで新しく始めた方法がジャーナリングです(英語日記で人生が変わる?|Hina卍式ジャーナリングで話す力も一緒に伸びる!)。ジャーナリングとは、何らかのテーマに基づいて英文を組み立てることで、自分が考えていることを話す力、そして、語彙を増やすトレーニングです。以下、僕が試しているやり方です。ジャーナリング例に僕の過去の学習例を載せているので、詳しくはそちらを参照してください。

STEP
言いたいことを英語で書く。(10 ~ 15分)

だいたい夜ご飯を食べた後にやっています。テーマは決めておらず、その時思い浮かんだことを書いています。最初は仕事のことや休日のプランなどが多かったですが、朝ジョギングをした感想、作ってみたいアプリの話、ジャーナリングの効果を実感した話など、多岐にわたっています。

僕の場合は、まだまだたどたどしいため、いったんノートに書いてからAIに添削してもらっています。また、簡単な表現や単語の場合は、このタイミングで機械翻訳や辞書を使ってささっと調べてしまいます。

ChatGPTに添削してもらう。(5分)

プロンプトはこんな感じ。見てわかる通り、指示はかなり適当で、何回かやり直すことで、理想的な回答を得ています。また、僕は入力が面倒くさいのと発音の練習もかねて、音声入力で行っています。8割くらいは意図した言葉が入力できますし、間違っても、送る前に修正すればいいだけなので、結構おすすめです。

STEP
使いたかった表現を復習する。(10分 ~ 20分)

Step1と2ででた知らない表現や単語を復習します。自分が考えた表現とAIが添削した表現を比較し、添削の内容が適切であることを確認したうえで、その表現を使って2, 3個他に例文を作ります。僕の場合は、Step3だけ、次の日の朝に行います。

Since I have to do remote work, I have time to do something instead of commuting to the offices. So I decided to jogging. But I noticed that I can stay focused on work easily and deeply, even if today’s tasks isn’t changed from yesterday. Of course, I couldn’t say that jogging changed today. I assume it contributes greatly. The most difficult things for maintaining conditions, there isn’t a perfect solution. Some days requires jogging or talking to someone, relaxing by one’s own, and so on. But the common rule is that if I don’t have free time, I can’t do those things.

More natural than do jogging or decided to jogging.

3. at an easy pace
A common phrase for exercise.
I ran at an easy pace.
We walked at a comfortable pace.

4. break a light sweat
Very natural.
I exercised until I broke a light sweat.
You don’t need an intense workout—just enough to break a sweat.

5. stay focused
You use this idea often, so it’s worth mastering.
I stayed focused throughout the meeting.
It’s easier to stay focused after exercising.

6. contribute a lot
Instead of contributes greatly in this context.
I think sleep contributed a lot to my performance.
This habit contributes a lot to my productivity.

7. The common factor is…
A useful phrase when finding patterns.
The common factor is that everyone practiced consistently.
The common factor among successful people is persistence.

My Thoughts

I found this sentence especially interesting:
The common factor, however, is that if I don’t have enough free time, I can’t do any of those things.
This connects with something you’ve mentioned before about work. It isn’t simply that jogging is the solution. Rather, having enough flexibility in your day lets you choose the right strategy for that particular day—whether that’s exercising, talking with someone, reading, or simply relaxing.
That’s an important distinction because it suggests your productivity depends not only on habits, but also on having enough autonomy to respond to what you need that day.
Your observation about concentration is also consistent with what many people experience. A short, low-intensity run often doesn’t create an immediate “high,” but it can improve alertness and sustained attention for the next few hours. So your experience is quite plausible.

Overall, I’d rate today’s journal around IELTS 6.5–7.0. Your ideas are becoming increasingly sophisticated. The main things to keep polishing are natural collocations (e.g., go for a jog, work remotely, stay focused) and article/preposition usage. The quality of your thinking is already strong; making those expressions automatic will help your English sound much more native-like.

ジャーナリングを続けて感じた変化

ジャーナリングを初めてまだ2週間程度ですが、いくつか良かったことがあります。

  • 本当に言いたいことを言えるようになっている実感
  • 低コスト・短時間なので続けやすい
  • 勉強というより、日記感覚で楽しめている

例えば、ジョギングが仕事中の集中力の維持に効いている気がする、と言いたいときに、今までの僕だったら、I think that jogging contributes to concentration in my working. と言っていたところを、I’m impressed by how much a morning jogging improves my concentration.と言えるようになりました。前者でも言いたいことは伝わると思いますが、流暢さ、自然さという点では後者の方が圧倒的に良いと思います。

また、上述した通り、時間も1日30 ~ 40分ほど、かつchatGPTはもともと有料プランを契約していたため、時間、コストの両面から続けやすいです。英会話は楽しいですが、月1万円はかかりますし、かといって参考書ですと、勉強感が強く、続けるのにはより忍耐力が必要になります。

ジャーナリングですと、日記感覚 かつ 気持ちや考えを整理する際にも使え、さらに、日常的に使う語彙を身に着けることができます。もちろん、英会話では生のコミュニケーションができますし、テキストでは体系的に学ぶことができるというメリットがあります。そのため、ジャーナリングで全てを補うことは絶対にできませんが、流暢さや日常的に使う語彙を身に着ける、継続しやすさ、そういう点では、ジャーナリングはおすすめかな、と思います。
